Leveraging Artificial Intelligence to Create Three-Dimensional Assessments in Science

Program Overview

This virtual workshop will guide educators through a practical process for developing three-dimensional (3D) science assessments aligned with the 2026 NJSLS-Science and informed by the NJDOE Performance Level Descriptors.

During the workshop, educators will collaborate to develop their own assessment prompts using a format similar to the NJ State Science Assessments.

Program Outcomes & Benefits

Topics to be addressed include the following:

• 2026 Revisions to the NJ Student Learning Standards in Science

• Overview of NJDOE Resources (e.g., STAMP Resources)

• Understanding and applying the NJDOE Performance Level Descriptors

• Developing Aligned Three-Dimensional (3D) Science Assessment Prompts

Participants will also be encouraged to experiment with various AI tools to save time and effort while developing authentically aligned 3D assessment prompts.

Ron Durso, Ed.S.

Science & Technology Education Supervisor, Fair Lawn Public Schools

For over 25 years, Ron has served as a biology teacher, adjunct professor, and educational leader focusing on the fields of science and engineering education in suburban and urban school districts. Through those experiences, he has developed interests in the needs of English Language Learners, gifted students, and students with special needs in the science classroom. Recently, he has been focusing on making "the trades" more accessible to high school students through enhancing community connections.

Ron has also served on various NJDOE committees, where he has helped revise the state science standards and provided input on the state science assessments. Through these roles and by working with middle school and high school teachers in his department, he has developed a strong, practical knowledge of three-dimensional teaching and assessment.

Since his first days as a science supervisor in 2008, Ron has dedicated himself to supporting other science supervisors and school leaders through grassroots efforts and through state and national organizations. He serves on multiple volunteer boards and committees. He is eager to share his knowledge and experience working with the emerging field of artificial intelligence in a manner that will streamline educators' efforts while enhancing their work products and, in turn, enable and refine the application of three-dimensional teaching in their classrooms.
